Sam Gilliam's boundlessly experimental printmaking often includes a myriad of colors and techniques. The current lot is refreshing in its simplicity, which showcases the textural quality of the medium."

The richly-textured, inky black of the present Sam Gilliam work is characteristic of collagraphy, a printmaking method that creates a deep relief. Composing the unique print is an intricate series of parallel lines that are subtly separated into four sections, or the four plates referenced in the work's title. Eschewing Gilliam's characteristic use of vivid color, 4 Plates nonetheless conveys a dynamic sense of energy through the graphic quality of its interweaving lines.
