"Wash II is one of the most complex and sculptural monotypes that I've seen by Gilliam to date. It beautifully mimics the three dimensional works using birch plywood and acrylic that he was creating at the time." – Sylvie Francois, Specialist, Prints & Multiples

American Color Field painter Sam Gilliam's works often blur the boundaries between mediums, whether painting and installation or, as seen here, painting and printmaking. This unique monotype speaks to the artist's penchant for creating surprising forms and textures in his prints with such unconventional materials and processes as hand-stitching, collage and relief painting. The various splashes and grooves that animate the work's surface are suggestive of the artist's hand and, like Gilliam's paintings, invite viewers to look closely at the complexities of the composition.
