The aerosol spray can is Lichtenstein's third foray into Pop art and his second use of the benday dots he is famous for. The print was published in the unbound book 1¢ Life by Walasse Ting. Spray Can as well as Lichtenstein's Girl illustrate Ting's poem "Around U.S.A.". The book was accompanied by lithographs from artists including Robert Indiana, James Rosenquist, Mel Ramos, and Jim Dine.
Impressions in the regular edition were not signed or otherwise inscribed. One trial proof is inscribed (by Ting) in ballpoint pen, bottom margin. One artist's proof is inscribed [Artist's proof], signed [rf Lichtenstein], and dated  in pencil, bottom margin. In the deluxe edition, the print is signed [rf Lichtenstein] in pencil, lower right. Also in the deluxe edition the following inscription printed from the plate in blue, appears along the right margin: [FREZH AIR 1 $ 25 ¢ BY ROY (1)]. Both the regular and the deluxe edition
